Cordillera Administrative Region

CAR Philippines, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain ProvinceThe Cordilleras are characterized by rugged, cloud-capped mountains with pine trees, wildflowers and mountain streams, and are home to the ethnic groups, the Bontocs, Ifugao and Kalingas.

Abra

Abra's culture is a cross between Spanish and the local Tingguian Tribal group, whose activities include making traditional crafts such as weaving, jewelry-making and dyeing. Historical sites include the Monument of Gabriela Silang, considered the "Joan of Arc" of Ilocos, the Pinaing of Peñarrubia (sacred stones) and the Tugot of Angalo (Footprint of Adam). Old Spanish Churches are also found in Bangued, Tayum and Lagangilang. Natural attractions include the Kimkimay Lake, Sibud-Sibud Cave, Libtec Underground River, Boliney Hot Spring and Victoria National Park.

Apayao

Apayao Province is considered to be "Cordillera's Last Frontier for Nature Richness". Natural attractions include the unpolluted Apayao River and waterfalls, viewing points, Anag-Sicapo Wildlife Sanctuaries and the Maton Underground River. Ancient Spanish Churches can also be found in Pudtol.

Benguet

Because of its role during World War 2, Benguet Province has plenty of memorials located at Camp Utopia, Kaliwaga Cave, Lamtang, Guerilla Saddle and Hill WWII. Remnants from the earliest known settlers include the Daraw Ancient Ruins, and ancient burial and mummy caves in Mt. Kabunian, Timbac, Apo Anno's and Opdas Caves, the Tinongchol Burial Rock and the Kabayan Mummy Caves. Other sites include the Capitol Museum at La Trinidad, Benguet Showrooms and Museum and Balatoc Mines.

Known for its cool, cloud-covered mountains, Baguio is a planned city with plenty of parks and gardens like the Botanical Gardens, Wright Park, Camp John Hay, Burnham Park and Mines View Park. The indigenous mountain people are known for their weaving, woodcarving and metal ornaments. Religious attractions include the Baguio Cathedral, Lourdes Grotto and the Chinese Bell Temple. Other sites include the Easter Weaving Room, the Saint Louis Filigree Shop, the Ifugao Wood Carvers and the Baguio Mountain Provinces Museum.

Ifugao

Ifugao is best known for its rice terraces that were constructed 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao tribe using their bare hands and wood as tools. Historic sites include the Philippine War Memorial Shrine at Kiangan, the National Museum, the surrender site of Yamashita and rice wine making in Kiangan. Natural attractions include the Nahtoban and Bintakan Caves, Ahin, ducligan and Tukukan Hot Springs, Amuyao, Napulawan and Anapawon Mountains, and Tappiya and Buyukan Waterfalls.

Kalinga

The Kalingas of the Cordilleras have a rich culture and exhibits of this culture can be found in the Museum of Kalinga in Bulanao, Tabuk. Natural attractions include rice terraces at Tinglayan, the Uguid Subterranean River, the Balbalasang National Park and Reservation, the Agamatan National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary and the Chico River.

Mountain Province

The most famous site in Mountain Province is the centuries-old Sagada Hanging Coffins and Burial Caves. Other sites include the Bontoc Village Museum, the Dap-ay Guiday, Besao Agricultural Stone Calendars, the Alab Petroglyph, the pagan god footprints, the Mabalot Oil Lake and the Chico River Mountain Trail. There are also numerous lakes and waterfalls in the province. The local folk are also known for their artistic weaving skills.
